I remember the 80's when NKOTB were all the craze. I alos remember and participated in the 90's boyband crap. I even attended an early N'Sync concert where Britney Spears (before the insane trashiness) was openeing for them. We were "crazy" about these groups but as as far I recall no one was ever sent death threats nor did the FBI have to step in. I'm exhauseted with hearing and seeing this Beiber kid! He was holing hands with some other teen girl celebrity and she got threats against her life. He lost as Best New Artsist at the Grammy's this year and the winner Esperanza Spalding was rewarded with (did you guess it?!), DEATH THREATS! Now, I'm not one to blame the celebrity for what the fans do but I do think if he cared at all he could at least speak out against this behavior. It's a s simple as "If you were truly my fans you wouldn't act this way and I don't want those types of people as fans".
Everywhere I look it's Beiber this and that. It's just...sad. There are real things happening in this world and yet Beiber is the Top news story on my 5:00 news. I took everything pretty well until the headline story on AOL.com the other days was about him cutting his hair! Oh no, why in the world would he do what everyone ELSE has the right to do?! This world is sinking further and further down the drain with every celebrity news announcement. Perhaps if the US were less concerned with a 15 year olds hair cut and more with war, famine, disease, charity and family then we MIGHT have a chance at getting back on our feet again.
Honestly, it makes me miss the days of the Clinton's sex scandal or Madonna's Coffee Table book.
An additional RANT:
If kids were not allowed so many ways to access the internet (FB,Tweet,Myspace,Etc) then the death threats wouldn't be as bad. There might be a few but not hundreds at a time! When I was that age and(I didn't but had I wanted to) decided to issue a threat I would have to get my gel pen, college rule notebook paper, sit and write it THEN explain to my Mom why I wanted an envelope/stamp...they would forget what they were mad about before they finished the letter! I don't only blame parents for giving the I-Phones and laptops but I blame the schools as well. If these types of applications were blocked on school computers then there would be a MAJOR decrease in the damage done by teens on the net. Everyone says teachers don't get paid enough to watch the kids all the time but they do get paid to watch them during school hours. Of course, this wouldn't be necessary if the school would simply block these sites. I know first hand that MANY public libraries have done this and I salute them for it! Why should people with valid research or educational requirements have to wait until a 13 year old gets off Twitter talking about how she's "In love" with the Beiber kid.
Between Beiber, Twilight, Kardashian, Lohan and Sheen I just think we're in a celebrity apocolypse and there are darker times ahead if we don't make some changes. I can't imagine the fate of my kids (not that we have any yet) if things continue down this path. I can hold my kids back, teach them right/wrong and do EVERYTHING I say to myself I'm going to do but in the end the ENTIRE system has to work together or else I will fail.
